Gayong Karambit 2011

The karambit originated in Java where, according to folklore, it was inspired by the claws of big cats. As with most weapons of the region, it was originally an agricultural implement designed to rake roots, gather threshing and plant rice. As it was weaponised, the blade became more curved to maximise cutting potential....

Karambit was used as a last resort when the fighter's other weapons were lost in battle. Nevertheless it was popular among women who would tie the weapon into their hair to be used in self-defense. Even today, silat masters regard it as a feminine weapon....

SSGI invite all martial art practitioners who Were in Ireland, France, UK, USA, and etc to participate in this seminar on January 2011.

Summer Time....

This Summer is very interesting. The sky was clear until 10.00pm. So we took the opportunity to do a training during the evening beginning 7.00pm on weekdays. Usually training finish at 9.30pm. Throughout this summer, we do twice classes a week.

Training run smoothly because we are not bound by time. So there are no problem if the training carried up to 3 hours. Before this, we are bound by time because we must rent the training places and have a limited time. Now we can review a lot of syllabus during the training. It was great.

This summer, most of our members have a job and part-time work. Therefore, we change the time training and hope all members can attend and training together.

This is the new training classes for this summer;

Sunday
6.00pm to 9.00pm
Castletroy Park, Limerick

Tuesday
7.00pm to 9.30pm
University of Limerick @ field near the East Gate or they called Arena Gate

Training at open area...

This time training was conducted in an open area at the park is across the road from Casteltroy College, Limerick. The weather is very good and help our training become smoothly and without any interruption. It is very different feel for practice in an open area compare in the studio. All movements easier and more confident to do.

This time our training is carried out for 3 hours. Because it is not necessary to pay the rent. He he he. So no need to rushing when do the training. A lot of lessons can be reviewed in detail and carefully.

NEWSPAPER AS A WEAPON

Did you think that newspaper can be a very dangerous weapon? For those who have never learn about that, certainly they will not believe it. Same like me. In Knife Seminar at Dublin on 14 March, 2010, Master Black Panther has provided additional lessons which used the newspaper as a weapon. Unbelieveble, there is a really very dangerous weapon.

Newspaper is very easy to bring it. Nobody will not mention it is will be a type of weapon. Magazine is also can use as weapon like a newspaper. It can be applied in making BUAH that we have learned. So there are no problem for anyone to defend themselves by using this techniques. Besides, we can make a people interested in reading among the community.

LOGO of Silat Seni Gayong Ireland

The proposal paper for registering of Silat Seni Gayong Ireland under MSD has been denied because of two reasons. First, we cannot use the name Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia in Ireland. Second, we must have our own symbol (loggo) for Silat Seni Gayong Ireland. If this two things can be done, there has no more osbtacles for registration.

Therefore, this new logo was produced to complete of demand from MSD. Those are the logo details...

Description regarding knife course

Knife is a common weapon in martial arts, used by various type of cuts and stabs..in combination with the right technique and the artistic approach, providing the practitioners with crucial fighting advantages...especially in self-defence. To know how to be effective with various kinds of knives, the Silat Seni Gayong from Malaysia warmly welcomes everybody to our basic art of knife seminar, which we will introduce the arts & philosophy via sharing of our concept and knowledge about our arts of self defense

A brief history of Gayong Ireland

History of Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia in RCSI at a glance...

The idea about bringing together a sports society of Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia, a traditional Malay martial art was brought about by a group of Malay students studying in RCSI. The idea was supported by the Malaysian Embassy who proposed to the establishment of Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia to be registered under this college, as our medium to share the richness culture with our fellow students Ireland, especially from RCSI.

The idea was then brought forward to the Pertubuhan Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia (PSSGM), based in our home country for further opinion, since this is among the pioneer projects of opening and sharing this rare martial arts with outside people which how it was traditionally done. We have full support with latter idea and hence, we proceeded with the formal application to establish under the Sports Union of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).

Our first meeting was brought about in the Friendship Room, where a representative from PSSGM visited us in guiding our way through the establishment of the society.

The conclusion from the meeting was to initially rebuild our silat spirit and motivation before officially opening our association to the rest of the RCSI students. We manage to gather 14 silat practitioners at the time, and started training and polishing the art of silat moves during the weekends in Eamonn Park, Sundrive Road. This was successfully done and brought back our strength to become a known and established martial arts association in Ireland, especially in bringing the name of RCSI to be part of our history in Ireland.

An official proposal was submitted through the RCSI Sports Co-ordinator on Monday, 23rd April 2007, together with all the required including the budget forms, booking forms and a rough plan about our annual activity. The proposal was accepted there and then. We were then given the green light to proceed with our plan starting in the new academic year of 2007/2008.

The Association of Silat Seni Gayong Ireland’s first committee members were as follows:

Sports Captain: Mohd Firdaus Che Ani

Vice Captain 1: Faheem Khan

Vice Captain 2: Muhammad Zainulariffin Dzubir

Secretary: Diana Abdul Rahman

Treasurer: Nor Adilah Zarin

Our first accomplishment was during the RCSI Fresher’s Week. Association of Silat Seni Gayong Malaysia RCSI won the First place on the best booth during the fresher’s recruitment day. We really never expected to be the winner on our first attempt, but probably it’s the beginner’s luck. We were so thankful.

The success then created an excellent reputation and motivated us to actively participate in college events and perform special demonstration upon invitation from inside and outside college.

BADEK

There were many other daggers in used in the Malay archiepalego. The commonest of them was the BADEK. It is a short stabbing weapon, with a simple, tubular wooden hilt following the same line as the single edged, straight blade which is about 8 inches long and 3-4 inch wide. The sheath has two parts, the shaft, and a crosspiece with a plain protuberance, about 2 inche deep, which is called 'the flower' though it is not carved or decorated. This flower prevents the little dagger from slipping down, once it has been tucked into the tight top fold of the sarong, with the flower projecting forwards. The shaft is narrow with a rounded wooden tip of the same patterned wood as the crosspiece, but with a different pattern from that of the shaft. There is often a brass ring at the base of the hilt which is fitted level with its wooden surface. The BADEK was easily concealed and could inflict a lethal wound.

THE BUNGA and SILAT FOREPLAY

The bunga literally the "flower" is the "formation dance" of the silat. The step movements, hand and finger control, head and neck turns and struts, rythmic combination of steps with head and hand movement, and body aerobics. Each silat variety has its own specific bunga set, though some place more emphasis on it than others. In silat forms that place great emphasis on the bunga, mastery of the techniques may take several years before one is able to reach the buah stage. In others, the bunga evolves as the buah techniques are mastered. The general importance of bunga in silat is that it helps to ward off aggression or physical force in one's opponent while at the same time allows one to select a move which locks a person in without direct injury to a vital body organ. The idea is to render a person helpless or immobile rather than to achieve an injury or fall. The bunga can be performed with or without an opponent and is often used in silat demonstrations during festivals or official ceremonial events.

Silat training session at Limerick on 17 January 2010 has runned smoothly. At this time, we have the youngest new member in our club, a kid aged 8 years old. He's so excited to join us in our training. His mother accompanied him during our training but just sit down outside the gelanggang. He he he. This is a good sign. Maybe next training session, more people will come to join our classes. Insya Allah.. we pray for that.

Silat Gayong Class Session 2010 at Limerick

Silat Gayong training session in Limerick for the year 2010 has begun on 10th January 2010. There was a heavy snow in Limerick at that time. Due to that terrible weather, it forces me to rush earlier in cold and freezing to St. Enda's Sport Complex. It took me about 30 minutes to reach there even the distance from my home is less than 10 km. However the training runned smoothly.

A few members is absent due to that disturbance but we have a new friend joined us for that day. He so interested in martial arts and had learned kungfu about 7 years. After he joined our training, he so excited and want to continue to learn Silat Gayong. It was unbelievable, he also pay his fee for the next class. Alhamdulillah.. this blessing comes from our teachers...
